As winter approaches, the Aquaculture Technology Service Teams of the Fisheries Research Institute urge fishermen to be prepared in advance

  • PostDate:2021-11-01

As winter approaches, the Fisheries Research Institute of the Council of Agriculture urges fishermen to take early precautions against the cold to reduce losses and maintain profits in the event of low temperatures. The Fisheries Research Institute has established the Aquaculture Technology Service Teams in its subordinate units, which can provide technical advice and guidance to fishermen with relevant needs in post-disaster rehabilitation.

The Fisheries Research Institute has pointed out that global warming and climate change are increasing the frequency of extreme weather events in recent years, often causing major impacts on fisheries. For example, in January 2016, the amount of damage caused by severe cold currents was as high as NT$3.26 billion. As a precautionary measure, the Fisheries Research Institute has called on fishermen to build wind sheds on the windward side of fish farms at the start of winter, increase water levels, and strengthen the preparation of overwintering ditches so as to enhance cold protection ability, in addition to maintaining heating equipment, and plan early harvesting when necessary to reduce cold damage.

According to the Fisheries Research Institute, when cold current strikes, fishermen can take the following measures: (1) during the low temperature period, avoid disturbing the water body or the fish stocks in fish farms, suspend feeding, and do not unnecessarily switch water wheels ; (2) during cold current retention, pay attention to the speed of the water temperature decreasing at any time, and take emergency measures, such as activating heating equipment to raise the water temperature in order to reduce death, when the water temperature is below 15°C; (3) remove fish floating on the water to prevent deterioration of water quality; and (4) after the temperature rises, start water wheels and feed according to the pool conditions.

The Fisheries Research Institute, it has established Aquaculture Technology Service Teams (shown in the Table below) in its subordinate units, which are fully on standby. Once there is relevant demand, the assistance mechanism will be activated at any time. In addition to cooperating with local governments to conduct disaster surveys, they also provide technical advice and guidance on post-disaster rehabilitation, so that farm operators can recover their production functions in a short period of time.
