It’s been more than 3 years since the shutdown of Penghu Aquarium, Fisheries Research Institute, Council of Agriculture. It recently completed the renovation with the investment of more than NT$40 million and a large number of manpower by Pengbo Oceanic Technology Corporation for the promotion of private participation. Pengbo Corporation specially invited the local officers, elected representatives, mainstream media and personnel from the Fisheries Research Institute to participate in the long-awaited event of “Prayer for Blessings, Embrace Ocean” in the afternoon of August 15. It also announced to reopen the Aquarium on August 16 for better operations. A grand reopening ceremony would be held in the next April to promote the tourism season of Penghu in 2019. All visitors, old and new, are welcome to visit the Aquarium to explore the amazing underwater world in Penghu. With blue sky, green sea and unique natural landscapes, Penghu is reputed as the most beautiful bay in recent years, which is also featured by abundant marine organisms and aquatic products. Therefore, the Fisheries Research Institute spent nearly NT$700 million and 6 years to build the Aquarium since 1991, which was officially opened to the public in April, 1998. Later in 2004, it introduced the promotion of private investment and participation, so Nanrenhu Corporation and Dadongshan Corporation participated in the operation successively. After Dadongshan requested to cancel the contract at the end of 2014, the Fisheries Research Institute determined the facilities renovation and renewal in the Aquarium. Since then the aquarium was shut down to take care of and manage the organisms exhibited, and for the purpose of renovation. Moreover, the promotion of private investment and participation was launched once again. Pengbo Oceanic Technology Corporation submitted the operation application based on a proposal of Operate-Transfer (OT)+ Rehabilitate-Operate-Transfer (ROT) under the provisions of Article 46, Act for Promotion of Private Participation. It was finally selected to sign the contract with the Fisheries Research Institute on June 23, 2017. After that, it was engaged in phase-I renovation work immediately, to grant a brand new outlook of Penghu Aquarium under the cooperation between the Corporation and the Institute, which would be shown on August 16. Pengbo Corporation has been responsible for the life support systems of many famous aquariums home and abroad, and has got rich experience of preserving the organisms exhibited, which was valued by the Fisheries Research Institute. Besides a brand new outlook of Penghu Aquarium, it will carry out the phase-II plan in the future to expand the space and interaction interface of exhibition activities, which will attract more visitors constantly. It will become a must-go scenic spot, and will be a key pillar to promote the development of tourism industry in Penghu. Eventually, it will achieve the three goals of “science and technology research”, “social education” and “tourism and recreation” initially set for the Aquarium.
