Mariculture Research Center, Fisheries Research Institute, Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan (hereinafter referred to as the Mariculture Center) has been established for one hundred years. The predecessor of the Mariculture Center was the Saltwater Aquaculture Farm established in the upper Khun-sin of Tainan under the Office of the Taiwan Governor-General in December, 1918, which was in charge of saltwater fish culture experiments and surveys. After the change of administration and relocation to the current site in Qigu in 1976, it will celebrate the 100th anniversary on December 22, 2018, and will show the major events of the Mariculture Center over the past century since the establishment. Actually aquaculture industry in Taiwan was originated in old days, which can be even tracked back to Koxinga times. Therefore, the aquaculture industry in Taiwan had flourished even before the Japanese occupation. Since the establishment in 1918, the Mariculture Center has gone through three periods of Japanese-Occupied Period, Taiwan Provincial Government Period and the Period of Ministry of Agriculture. Under the guidance of policies and the support of administration in each period, it accomplished the researches for seawater economy, such as the fish and shellfish development and breeding research, the culture technique improvement, aquatic product safety inspection, saltwater ecological aquaculture models and the development of risk evaluation platform for the genetic modified aquatic organisms. Besides working on the previous researches, it will develop towards the directions of smart environmental control facilities, shellfish species preservation and green energy technologies of fishing industry. Moreover, in response to the policies of “Nuclear-Free Homeland by 2025” and the instruction of Agriculture Minister Lin Tsung-hsien, the Mariculture Center has set up green energy science experiment pilot zone respectively in the headquarter in Qigu and the laboratory in Tai-se-hiong, which takes advantage of PV facilities to develop the culture modules and integration technologies with economic production scale. Looking back at the history, the Mariculture has gone through one hundred years from 1918 to 2018. In the future, it will pass down the advanced and abundant research achievement and practical experience over the past years, and make efforts in technological innovation and sustainable development of aquaculture industry. Moreover, it expects to turn over a new leaf for the history of aquatic scientific research in Taiwan, and to achieve new milestone.
